Incepted

sheriffstarV6cornerWho’s excited for August movies? It used to be the dumping ground for all the summer movies that weren’t good enough to be considered legit.

But now, we get future classics like The Expendables and Piranha 3D! Yes! Yes…

Moving on, we’ve been enjoying the slow summer with creative endeavors. Case in point: Poster Goofs.

Enjoy!

Inception

Review by Loc

The trailers looked fantastic. The early words were encouraging. The lack of other options this summer made it a welcome entrant. Yes, Inception is positioned to be the great summer flick of 2010, joining its Dark Knight brethren as Christopher Nolan’s badass brigade of mid-July awesomeness. With mystery shrouding its actual story, the early glimpses and fleeting whispers have only helped build the anticipation for this movie. Quick hit: and it’s merely OK.

As a whole, Inception is clearly one of the quality pictures for this summer. Along with Toy Story 3, Inception stands above the rest of the droning, formulaic mass of summer blah that you’ve had to face this year. However, also like Toy Story 3, solid is as far as this film gets. Phrases like visually mindblowing, intelligent and complex, and stunning in execution, are all hyperbole, which is unfortunate.

Simply put, Inception is about Continue reading Inception

Summer Toys

sheriffstarV6cornerSo, after Iron Man 2, very little has been worth seeing. That’s not to say Hollywood hasn’t tried, that’s just to say that we haven’t taken the bait. In an age where movie tickets cost over $10 and that doesn’t include the $3 fee for IMAX or 3D, the wallet does the decision making here.

So we waited until Toy Story 3 to make it back out to the theater. Enjoy the review below. We also have some extra DVD reviews for your enjoyment.

After all, isn’t it better to read about the crappy stuff instead of spend money on it?

Valentine’s Day

Review by Loc

You know what would be great? A fun, relevant look at love on a day celebrated for romance: Valentine’s Day. How about taking, I don’t know, 5 or 6 stories, and putting them on film. In fact, let’s make them semi-realistic, some will be good, some will be sad, some will be funny, all will be about love. And let’s have some intersection, too, sorta like Crash did with random characters actually being connected. We can have things like siblings or friends, chance encounters, all that stuff. And let’s make it an all-star cast, let’s get some of the bright, young Hollywood faces on the screen playing bit roles in a huge ensemble! This is great! What? They did that in Love Actually? Quick hit: so, we can do it American!

I’m guessing this is what the pitch sounded like. Or maybe it went, hell if it worked for Christmas in London, let’s make it…Valentine’s Day in…Los Angeles. Sold and sold! And commence with poorly conceived characters in shallow situations with actors exuding little charisma. Sold again! Continue reading Valentine’s Day

She’s Out of My League

Review by Loc

Imagine a Michael Cera movie where he’s the geeky guy who ends up with the hot chick. Ok, that applies to every Michael Cera movie, but just imagine a movie like that. Now, take the super-lanky kid from Tropic Thunder, and have him play the geek. And take some unknown blond for the hot chick. And imagine a script in the Judd Apatow region, slightly funny, slightly crude, and mostly unpolished. Set the film in Pittsburg, and you have…She’s Out of My League! Quick hit: oof.

It’s one thing to have a formula film. There’s comfort in knowing what you’re about to get. Sure, it’s not super exciting, but at least you know the drill and you’ll get some fun out it. This is like that, except a little worse for the wear. You have Jay Baruchel playing a Michael Cera-type geek with a little less awkwardness. So the apparent question is why not have Michael Cera? I don’t know, but there is a second question, too. Why would a geeky, lanky guy have less awkwardness? Doesn’t that water-down the character and make him even less watchable? Yes, yes it does. Continue reading She’s Out of My League
